Embracing Pro-Aging: A Positive Approach to Beauty in Your 40s and 50s

Ageing is of course an inevitability for us all, but never before have people had greater control on how they age.

Multi-award winning, London based, aesthetic and plastic surgeon, Dr Rozina Ali has built her practice, not around the concept of anti-ageing, but a beauty philosophy of pro-ageing. Helping her clients to age with attitude; gracefully, with confidence and on their own terms. In this blog she provides her essential pro-ageing guide for a positive approach to beauty in your 40s and 50s.

The natural deterioration of ageing will start earlier than it is noticed. It begins in your 20s but the early effects may not be visible until your 30s. Women when they reach their 40s and 50s often consider it to be the most vital time of their lives, where confidence and experience shines from within. Whilst they may never have never felt more comfortable in their own skin, by this time in their lives they are often considering their options for addressing the tell-tale signs of a life well lived on their skin.

Collagen is a vital protein that supports skin elasticity and structure. It naturally declines with age, at the rate of 1.5% per year from our early 20s, then takes a big downturn during the menopausal phase, so by the time they reach their 40s and 50s, women will reach out to me to explore their options. Those all-important initial consultation meetings with my patients are like a journey of discovery for us both. Together we peel back the layers to truly understand the desired outcomes and then develop a staged treatment plan to achieve them.

Until recently, women of any ages wishing to retain a youthful appearance had little alternative other than to turn to surgical procedures which, whether large or small, have associated downtime and require a period of recovery. The progress of aesthetic medicine has been such that there is now an array of non-surgical alternatives that when used expertly, in combination and routinely, the hands of time are not just held but even turned back.

There are so many options for women from their mid 30’s onwards to access to improve skin quality, plump up, inflate and lift underlying tissues. Most powerfully, these options offer a more consistent and natural looking result, preserving a consistent social memory of you as you grow older, so slowly, so generously and with grace. Rozina’s signature belief is to use treatments that harness the body’s own renewal and healing mechanisms to combat signs of ageing. I am proud of my reputation as an early advocate and pioneer of regenerative aesthetics; treatments that stimulate the patient’s own tissue growth mechanisms to achieve more natural looking results.

Below are just some of the treatments that are representative of my hallmark, ongoing pro-ageing treatment programme to deliver subtle incremental changes that result in a transformative impact:

  • Peel treatments offer a powerful and effective solution for achieving smoother, more radiant skin by safely treating or removing outer skin layers and stimulating cellular renewal. They can be used to clarify and gently refresh skin or to deeply and fundamentally alter pigmentation or to reduce pores, reduce lines and wrinkles.

  • Botulinum Toxin is one of the most popular and effective non-surgical muscle relaxants in aesthetic medicine for reducing wrinkles and achieving a smoother, more youthful appearance.

  • Facial fillers are used with flair and a modern twist for achieving youthful and rejuvenated skin. They are injectable substances of various concentrations and consistency used to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial contours.

  • Dermal non-crosslinked Hyaluronic acid (HA) filler such as Profhilo to deeply rehydrate facial skin and soften fine lines, wrinkles and creases.

  • Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates controlled clinical micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. This process stimulates the skin’s natural healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, leading to smoother, firmer, and more youthful- looking skin. It also facilitates the passage of products deep into the dermis, bypassing the impermeable layer of the protective outer epidermis.

  • Radiofrequency Skin Tightening is a non-invasive, but long-lasting and effective form of skin rejuvenation. This usually comfortable and relaxing treatment works by delivering heat energy to the dermis, below the epidermal skin surface, to induce the underlying fibroblast to produce more collagen and elastin. It can be combined with muscle stimulation to lift sagging tissues and shorten stretched ligaments.

  • Polynucleotides (derived from salmon sperm) can be used to restore skin tone, enhance elasticity and add antioxidant capacity into the dermis. Polynucleotides are offered on all exposed skin including facial skin and other exposed areas such as neck, decollete, backs of hands, elbows, knee

  • Exosome treatments can also be used to promote skin renewal, improve texture, and enhance overall skin health. Derived from extracellular vesicles, which are released by all types of cells in the body; think of them as mobile repair kits that can be targeted to specific cell areas. In aesthetic procedures, exosomes are used to promote skin renewal, improve texture, and enhance overall skin health.

My practice offers a broad range of personalised aesthetic surgical procedures to refine and smooth facial features, revitalise appearance and help you achieve your desired aesthetic. Common surgeries for women in their 40s and 50s include eyelid surgery to rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes, face and neck lifts to lift and tighten sagging facial and crepey neck tissues.

Addressing areas of the body that cause dissatisfaction or discomfort, can be a deeply empowering exercise that can have a profound psychological impact, boosting self-confidence and overall wellbeing. Deciding on surgery is a deeply personal decision; selecting surgical procedures or non-surgical options that are right for you, their timing, combinations and frequency requires much discussion and it’s my privilege to be able to offer decades of experience and expertise to support you in your selection. Together we will evaluate your concerns and consider all options to help you make an informed decision to achieve your goals and enhance your natural beauty.

My pro-ageing ethos is not just about finding effective solutions to physical concerns, it’s a mindset. Together we develop an ongoing collaborative relationship to support you to age proactively with the grace, dignity and chutzpah you want! Youthfulness is an attitude, a posture, an intention. It’s about who you are and how you think, it’s not primarily about how you look. Aesthetics is fundamentally about aligning your mental image of yourself with your physical image.
