How will a fat transfer to breast procedure benefit me?

Fat transfer to the breast is a procedure that uses gentle, low-suction liposuction type techniques to harvest fat directly under the skin- subcutaneous- from areas where there is excess or unwanted fat. The fat is washed, filtered, and prepared for injection into the breast, just beneath the breast skin envelope and over the breast muscle. It's an exemplary method for achieving a moderate increase in breast size while maintaining a soft, and mobile breast that looks and feels entirely natural. Fat transfer is measured and accurate and can be ideal for correcting difficult problems like mild or localised breast asymmetries.

Fat transfer alone can enhance breast volume by only 1-2 cup sizes as well as restore volume after breast-conserving tumour surgeries like lumpectomy or wide local excision. It is particularly beneficial in cases of asymmetry, allowing for more nuanced, balanced results with volume added where volume is required, or desired. It’s the superlative option for targeting specific areas, such as upper pole deflation after the breast-feeding, weight loss and/or ageing, rather than simply enlarging the entire breast volume.

Also known as fat grafting, autologous fat transfer, lipo-filling, or lipo-injection, this technique is truly the future of breast augmentation. Dr. Rozina Ali believes that “fat is the future” and breast enhancement will benefit from this ultimate in recycling your own tissues to enhance your body. The transfer of tissue rich in stem cells to naturally enhance your own tissues is so exciting.

Fat transfer’s  positive effect on the quality of the overlying skin due to the rich source of adult mesenchymal stem cells means it  can be used to help treat burns or radiotherapy damaged tissues.

In the burgeoning world of regenerative aesthetics, fat transfer can be used as an adjunct to breast implants, allowing the use of smaller implants, less disruptive sub-glandular placement and a more natural look.

Who would benefit from the fat transfer to breast procedure?

Those who are well-informed, with realistic expectations looking for a 1-2 cup size increase in breast size and prefer  natural looking, feeling, moving breasts and minimal scars are ideal candidates for this treatment; whether Kensington based or further afield. It is also suitable for those wishing for a natural alternative to breast implants or to improve asymmetry and achieve a moderate increase in breast size. Individuals do need to have sufficient excess fat elsewhere on the body (e.g. in their thighs, flanks, abdomen) or to consider staged, serial fat transfer over two or three procedures.

YOUR FAT TRANSFER JOURNEY

1) The Aesthetic Consultation

Dr Rozina Ali and her team will take the time to deeply understand your individual goals and consider all the factors that may influence the outcome. This vital stage of the process not only provides an opportunity to address any questions or concerns, but also enables us to develop a treatment plan, personalised to your needs and preferred outcomes.

2) Your Treatment

Fat transfer is a meticulous multi-stepped process: Firstly, fat needs to be carefully harvested in a process that is superficially similar to liposuction but designed to ensure that the fat cells are harvested gently, alive and undamaged. Each fat cell or adipocyte is accompanied by a supply of stem cells found near the small subcutaneous blood vessels. A tumescent or wet technique and mechanical power assisted (vibrating) liposuction device is used to dislodge the fat and float out intact living fat cells using only low suction pressures. In this way the fat cells and stem cells are harvested healthy, intact and viable.

Next, the harvested fat is washed, filtered and purified, then  prepared in small 10-20mls aliquots for careful re-injection under low pressure into the tissues around the breast gland. This procedure can be offered under local anesthetic or under general anesthetic depending on the volume of fat required and the areas of fat harvest.

The actual injection or lipofilling is usually carried out in the same procedure, but very recently, it has become viable to reinject stored aliquots of fat into various sites on an outpatient basis over any frequency or length of time.

3) Your Aftercare

A surgical compression garment is provided for the fat donor site , usually the abdomen or thighs, occasionally upper arms or back fat. A first stage, post-operative, fat transfer bra is offered to support the breasts without compressing the blood supply to the transferred fat. Mild swelling and bruising may be experienced in both the recipient and donor sites. Discomfort can be managed with oral over-the-counter painkillers and rest. Strenuous activity should be avoided in the immediate recovery period and normal activities may be resumed within a few weeks after the procedure.

Where will the treatment take place?

With operating facilities in such prestigious locations as King Edward VII hospital and the Weymouth Street hospital in Marylebone, the heart of London's Harley street medical district, you can be assured of expert and responsive surgical care.

Wound checks and outpatient visits are offered in both Marylebone and Kensington around several sites in the sumptuous Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. The Rozina Ali Clinic offers best in class, Kensington based, bespoke aesthetic treatments tailored to your individual needs.

Frequently Asked Fat Transfer Questions

  • Fat transfer to the breast is a procedure that uses a gentle, low-suction liposuction technique to harvest fat from areas where it's not wanted. This fat is then washed, filtered, and prepared for injection into the breast tissue, just beneath the breast envelope and over the breast fascia.

  • Ideal candidates are generally healthy individuals with enough body fat to harvest for the procedure. It’s also important to have realistic expectations about the results, which are more subtle than breast implants.

  • The fat transfer procedure typically takes about 2-4 hours, depending on the amount of fat being harvested and transferred.

  • A surgical compression garment is provided for the fat donor site (abdominal binder, leggings) and a first stage, post-operative, fat transfer bra to support the breasts without compressing the transferred fat. Mild swelling and bruising may be experienced in both the recipient and donor sites. Discomfort can be managed with painkillers and rest. Strenuous activity should be avoided in the immediate recovery period and normal activities may be resumed within a few days/weeks after the procedure.

  • As with any surgery, there are risks such as infection, fat necrosis (death of fat cells), cysts, or calcification. However, since the procedure uses your own fat, the risks of rejection or allergic reactions are low.

  • Fat transfer provides a more natural look and feel, as well as the added benefit of body contouring from the liposuction. However, fat transfer generally results in a more modest increase in breast size compared to implants.

  • Yes, fat transfer can be combined with breast lift (mastopexy) or even small implants to achieve the desired shape and volume.
