How will a facelift benefit me?

Ageing, illness, sun exposure, stress and weight loss can all take their toll on the various components of the face—affecting bone, dentition, soft tissue, muscle, ligaments and fat components. When facial volume decreases, and the skin becomes less elastic, it leads to the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, lines, and loose skin which can be manifest as softened contours, excess skin and  apparent jowls.

These concerns can all be addressed through a facelift, restoring both form -shape and volume and function, attraction and pleasure. The changes can rejuvenate your whole appearance and your whole outlook. Facelift, known in Greek as rhytidectomy or wrinkle removal is a limited term for a whole collection of surgical benefits including the removal of excess loose skin, stretching of wrinkles, tightening and lifting sagging underlying tissues and repositioning descending structures (fat pads) to rejuvenate the face.

There are as many different types of facelift as there are faces. Each procedure is individualised to address your particular areas of concern. As a matter of course, in order to rejuvenate, volumise and regenerate a face, Dr Rozina Ali will add fat and stem cells to her facelift protocols to restore volume and overlying skin elasticity to give the best possible aesthetic outcome and longevity to the result.

Dr Rozina Ali offers an extensive range of facelift procedures through the Rozina Ali Clinic in Kensington, including:

- SMAS facelift: SMAS stands for superficial musculo-aponeurotic system, the strong fascia overlying the muscles of the face. This procedure focuses on tightening the fascia tighten and lift the underlying facial musculature and fat pads

- Deep Plane facelift: This is a deeper technique designed to provide a natural and long-lasting rejuvenation of the face. It involves repositioning and tightening the deeper layers of the face, including the muscles and connective tissues without separating the skin from these layers

- MACS lift: MACS stands for Minimal Access Cranial Suspension facelift. This is a less invasive surgical procedure using purse string sutures to address more moderate signs of facial ageing. It relies on elastic skin tone and provides lift of underlying structures.

Who would benefit from a facelift?

Suitable candidates for a facelift include healthy individuals who are concerned about softening contours and droop as well as increasing wrinkles, creases or jowls. For some people, noticeable facial ageing may have a detrimental effect on self-esteem or social/emotional function, it can also affect relevance in the workplace. A facelift can address a sagging lower face, jowls, marionette lines, a soft or broken jawline, a face merging into the neck without a defined border, deep nasolabial creases. The facelift addresses the downward and outward movement of underlying structures and the downward droop of loose or crepey skin. For those with thin or even sunken empty faces, Rozina Ali can provide repositioning of fat pads and volumising of facial compartments with fat transfer. Fat is the very elixir of youth in the right surgical hands.

YOUR FACELIFT JOURNEY

1) The Aesthetic Consultation

The consultation process before a facelift is a vital first step in your transformation journey. In her Kensington clinic, Dr Rozina Ali and her team will take the time to deeply understand your individual goals, assess your facial structure, and consider all the factors that may influence the outcome. This vital stage of the process not only provides an opportunity to address any questions or concerns, but also enables us to develop a treatment plan, personalised to your needs and preferred outcomes. This can include collagen supplements, non-surgical treatments and psychological support.

2) Your Treatment

Depending on the extent of the corrections needed, incisions are carefully made in discreet areas like along the temple hairline, around the ear creases, and possibly extending into the hairline behind the ear.

The neck is addressed during a facelift, and in some cases, a small incision under the chin may be necessary. Once the skin and underlying tissues are lifted, fat is repositioned as needed, and the underlying fascia (SMAS) is tightened to restore youthful contours to the face and neck, adding volume where it’s needed. Excess skin is trimmed away, and the remaining skin is redraped for a smooth, natural result.

A small drain is typically placed to remove any excess fluid and is removed the morning after surgery.

3) Your Aftercare

After the procedure, a facelift bandage is used to support the chin/neck interface and to minimise swelling and bruising. Discomfort can be managed with elevation, reduced activity and moderate over-the-counter painkillers. Strenuous activities should be avoided during the recovery period.

Frequently Asked Facelift Questions

  • Ideal candidates for a facelift are individuals who are experiencing signs of aging, such as sagging skin, deep wrinkles, or jowls, and have good skin elasticity. Candidates should also be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

  • A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and sagging skin caused by aging. It typically focuses on the lower face and neck to create a more youthful appearance.

  • It is very important that you follow the advice of your surgeon carefully after a facelift.

    Post-surgery advice may include:

    • make sure that you have someone to take you home and who can look after you for at least 24 hours following this procedure;

    • you will be advised to keep your head propped up at night in order to reduce swelling;

    • use recommended painkillers as required;

    • you may need to return for stitches or staples to be removed after a week or so;

    • you should avoid any strenuous exercise for at least 2 weeks following surgery. Your surgeon will usually advise you when you can return to normal activities;

    • contact your surgeon immediately if you notice any signs of infection or if you experience bleeding or a sudden increase in pain.

  • Most people can have this surgery as long as they are generally in good health. It is also vital that you are realistic about what you expect from a facelift.

    If you are prone to keloid (red, angry, raised) scars, or have a history of problems with wound healing your surgeon may not recommend this procedure or may caution you that scars could be raised and very visible.

  • It is highly unlikely that anyone considering a facelift surgery would be able to access this free of charge on the National Health Service.

    However would always recommend that you visit your General Practitioner before embarking upon a cosmetic procedure involving surgery.

    As well as their advice and guidance they may also be able to refer you to a local surgeon for a consultation.

    The NHS has set out the following guidelines on how to get cosmetic surgery through the NHS:

    "To qualify for surgery on the NHS you must meet specific criteria as set out by your local health authority. The NHS will not pay for surgery for cosmetic reasons alone. Reconstructive and cosmetic surgery to correct, or improve, congenital abnormalities and injuries will usually be carried out free of charge.

    NHS reconstructive surgery is performed by plastic surgeons who have had extensive training and belong to the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. Surgeons who carry out cosmetic surgery through the NHS also belong to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

    To receive cosmetic surgery from the NHS, you will normally need a referral from your GP. You will have a consultation with a plastic surgeon and an assessment by a psychiatrist, or psychologist. It will then be decided whether there is enough social, psychological, or physical benefit to be gained to justify surgery."

  • Depending on the length of the operation, you may be allowed go home after a few hours, or remain in hospital for a couple of days. Most patients return to work 10 to 14 days after the surgery.

  • During the procedure, anesthesia is used, so patients won’t feel pain. Some discomfort, tightness, or soreness is normal during recovery, but pain is usually manageable with prescribed medications.
