The “Bleph Bun”: Expert alternatives for awards-season glamour

Dr Rozina Ali is a highly qualified consultant reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon. With a specialist focus on facial aesthetics, she has 25 years experience in the NHS and nearly two decades in private practice and will soon be opening the R&A Clinic in South Kensington. Here she will offer surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation tailored to each patient. Her expertise in eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) makes her uniquely placed to comment on the latest beauty trend sweeping this
awards season: the so-called “blepharoplasty bun.”

As we head into awards season, I’ve noticed a hairstyle making waves across red carpets and social media. The “blepharoplasty bun” is a slick, tight up-do designed to pull the eyes and cheekbones into a sharper, more lifted contour, mimicking the effects of eyelid surgery. It is easy to understand the appeal. As a plastic surgeon, I know how transformative a brighter, more open eye area can be. For many of my patients, eyelid rejuvenation is high on their wish list, and with good reason. As time passes, the skin around our eyes naturally loses its elasticity. This can
cause fine lines, wrinkles, and folds on the upper lids, while the lower lids may develop deeper creases or puffiness. Some people notice under-eye bags even at a young age due to genetics, and lifestyle factors like stress, poor sleep, or diet can make these changes more obvious. In more
advanced cases, heavy lids may droop over the eyelashes, sometimes even interfering with vision.

But while surgery addresses the problem with precision and care, this hairstyle attempts to force the same look by pulling the scalp unnaturally tight. And that comes with drawbacks. Wearing hair under
such extreme tension may look striking on camera, but it places real stress on the scalp and hairline. It can cause discomfort and headaches, compromise circulation, and over time even lead to thinning or permanent loss of hair at the temples. And unlike surgery, which is tailored to the individual, the “one-size-fits-all” bun risks making features look distorted or severe.

I am a highly qualified consultant reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon. I am known for an absolute passion for beauty and my practice has a strong focus on facial aesthetics. I am renowned for my eye and expertise and how to provide both surgical and non-surgical treatments to fully optimise and maintain a face. Rather than considering a damaging hairstyle, an alternative and longer lasting result could be achieved by the blepharoplasty procedure, a surgical approach designed to remove excess upper or lower eyelid skin. Blepharoplasty improves the appearance of excess skin of the eyelids, causing them to look and feel less folded or baggy.

With this procedure, I carefully place incisions hidden in the natural crease of the eyelid. Through these I remove excess skin, tighten muscle, and adjust fat pads to restore a lighter, smoother contour. The results are not only aesthetically fresher but, in some cases, also improve vision where sagging skin has begun to obstruct sight.

For the lower lids, surgery is not always the first step, here I might also recommend advanced non-surgical treatments such as peels, microneedling, or polynucleotides to target fine lines or discoloration. The key is tailoring treatment to the individual, not forcing the anatomy into a fleeting fashion trend.

The “blepharoplasty bun” may be this season’s headline look, but beauty should never come at the expense of scalp health or hair integrity. If you are considering ways to refresh your eyes, know that there are safe, elegant, and lasting options available that respect your features and enhance your natural expression.
