What is a Lip Lift?
As we age, we grow long in the tooth (gums recede) and the skin of the upper lip can become longer and the upper lip droops lower. It can be hard to discern why but even a few millimetres of droop can make the face look imbalanced and ‘old’. A short upper lip describes a perter, pouting upper lip and that is definitely more youthful. A lip lift is designed to do exactly that, lift the upper lip by a few millimetres and hide the scars within the nostril sill. The results from a lip lift are long-lasting and restore a more youthful and harmonious facial aesthetic.
Unlike fillers, which may add weight to the lip and are only temporary, a lip lift procedure is a permanent solution to achieving a more balanced lower face by shortening the distance between the base of the nose and border of the red vermillion of the upper lip.
A lip lift is a great option if you’re looking to showcase the natural shape and fullness of your lips while creating a more youthful, balanced appearance. It can help expose more of the upper teeth when you smile, making your expression appear more open and youthful.

How a Lip Lift is performed

The Consultation
Dr Rozina Ali will discuss at length your aesthetic aims and your medical history as part of the consultation process. Dr Ali will also examine your facial features and look to understand the distance between your nose and upper lip, the shape of your lip and the quality of your skin to determine the best approach. Rozina will explain the procedure clearly and will ensure you understand any potential risks and likely recovery time. She will also show you illustrative before and after pictures so you can visualise the potential results.
Your Treatment
A lip lift is usually under a local anaesthetic in an outpatient theatre setting or under general anaesthetic in a daycare facility. The procedure takes approximately 45-60 mins and involves removing a strip of skin just under the base of the nose, also known as “bullhorn” skin excision due to its shape. The wound is closed with deep, slow dissolving sutures hidden in the base of the nostrils, followed by very fine, non-dissolvable skin sutures which are removed at 1 week.

Your Aftercare
Recovery typically involves mild swelling and bruising, which subsides over the course of several days to a week. Discomfort can be managed with the use of over-the-counter analgesia and an ice pack may be applied for the first 48 hours. Strenuous activities including exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks and an antibiotic based ointment is provided to be applied to the suture line twice a day.
