What is a Blepharoplasty?
As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and the tissues start to slacken, particularly around the eyelids. This leads to fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin forming folds in the upper lids and deepening creases around the lower lids. Additionally, the weakening muscles allow the fat cushioning around the eyes to herniate or bulge forward, creating ‘bags’ around the eyes. Some people may notice bags under their eyes even in early adulthood due to genetic factors. The issue often worsens after a stressful day or poor sleep, as fluid settles in the loose skin of the eyelids. Stress and poor diet contribute to worsening lines, wrinkles, folds of the overlying thin skin.
Moreover, drooping heavy upper lids can exacerbate this issue, with excess skin sometimes hanging over the eyelashes and even obstructing vision. Eyelid surgery is referred to as a blepharoplasty and is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess upper or lower eyelid skin. At the same time, any underlying bulging fat that is herniating onto the eyelids can be addressed by reduction or removal. The procedure cannot address droopy eyebrows and does not extend to the full or bony brow skin between eyelid and eyebrow. Blepharoplasty will improve the appearance of excess skin of the eyelids. Causing them to look and feel less folded or baggy. Surgery is most often performed on the upper lids but Rozina will offer a four-lid blepharoplasty to address lower lids too where required and often as part of a facial rejuvenation procedure.

Who would benefit from Eyelid surgery?
Healthy individuals without any underlying eye conditions such as ptosis, red eyes or dry eyes, who are concerned about any loose or sagging skin that is disturbing the natural contour of the upper eyelid. Excess upper eyelid skin can be noticed early when eye makeup continually smudges or collects in the creases, or as it worsens, when lateral skin hangs over the outer eyelid making it heavy or even impairing peripheral vision. Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the inner corners of the eyelids can also contribute to early signs of tiredness or ageing and give an impression of someone who looks older, more tired or less energetic than they
actually are. Blepharoplasty deals with excess skin and fine wrinkles of the eyelids and underlying fat bags, par excellence.
How Eyelid surgery is performed
The Consultation
Dr Rozina Ali views the consultation process for eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, as key to ensure patients have a full understanding and are prepared for the procedure. Dr Ali will review your medical history, including past surgeries and any medication
you might be taking. She will then thoroughly examine your eyelids to evaluate sagging skin, fat protrusion, and any vision-related issues. Rozina will discuss your aesthetic goals, address concerns, and explain her surgical techniques, showing before-and-after photos to guide you to the most realistic expectations.

Your Treatment
Incisions are strategically placed within natural eyelid creases to conceal resulting scars. Upper eyelid correction involves accessing fat deposits and removing excess skin and muscle through these incisions. Peels, microneedling, Global Eyecon, polynucleotides and fillers are all non-surgical adjuvant therapies that can be used to reduce eyelid discoloration and wrinkles, surgery is not always the first line or last line of treatment for delicate eyelids.
Your Aftercare
After the procedure, you will receive lubricating ointment or eyedrops and a cold eye compress or mask to use intermittently to reduce swelling. Specific post-operative instructions involving care for your cornea as well as skin and suture line. Initial healing may involve mild swelling, bruising, irritation, dry eyes, and discomfort, which can be managed with rest, cold compresses and ointment.
