What Nipple and Areola procedures are there?

Whilst concerns with the appearance of the nipples or areola are common, many men and women do not seek treatment until later in life. There are a range of nipple surgery and areola treatment options available depending on your particular concern.

Treatment for enlarged nipples involves a short local anaesthetic day case procedure to reduce length, reduce girth or symmetrise appearance. This is also known as a nipple reduction procedure, which refines both the size and projection of the nipple to achieve a more balanced, proportionate look.

For inverted nipples, a short local anaesthetic day case procedure to evert the nipples and a circlage suture to keep them everted, is required. A micro-fat transfer procedure can also help with inverted or small nipples.

Accessory nipples can occur along the milk line (from axilla to groin) in both men and women. Treatment involves a short local anaesthetic day case procedure to remove the accessory nipples/breast tissue.

Nipple reconstruction or nipple share (nipple transfer) is one of Rozina Ali’s specialist area of expertise and is very much part of her reconstructive forte.

The areola is simply a circular area of specialised pigmented skin that surrounds the nipple. The texture and colour of the skin is different to the rest of the breast. Like every breast, every areola is unique in size, shape, and colour. Enlarged areola, asymmetric areola or herniated areola may lead people to seek clinical care.

Dr Rozina Ali offers treatment to male and female clients and has developed several specialised techniques for areola reduction and areola reconstruction. Treatment involves a short local anaesthetic day case procedure.

Who would benefit from Nipple and Areola procedures?

Individuals who may wish to make changes to their nipples or areolas because they are uncomfortable or unhappy with how they look, or to address abnormalities such as asymmetry, inverted nipples, or oversized areolas, or for those who require nipple/ areola reconstruction as part of breast reconstruction.

Such nipple surgery or areola surgery procedures are highly personal, and some self-consciousness is of course natural. With over 25 years of experience in the NHS, including nearly two decades as a consultant plastic surgeon, and extensive international training, Dr Ali will put you at ease and ensure your treatment is tailored to your unique needs.

How Nipple and Areola procedures are performed

The Consultation

The consultation process for nipple and areola treatments involves several key steps to ensure comprehensive care and a tailored treatment plan. It begins with an initial consultation where Dr Rozina Ali will review your medical history to determine your candidacy for treatment and to understand your reasons for seeking help, be it for aesthetic enhancement or reconstruction. She will conduct a physical examination to assess your breasts and nipples for any concerns, taking photos for medical records. Dr Ali will discuss treatment options, expected outcomes and recovery times. Understanding this process can help you approach nipple and areola treatments with confidence and clarity.

Your Treatment

Treatment is dependent on the type of procedure required, but usually Dr Rozina Ali will perform this procedure as a day case using local anaesthetic. Excess tissues are removed, and the areola repositioned. Nipple ducts may need to be released to correct an inverted nipple. Nipple reconstruction is the pinnacle of skin origami.

Your Aftercare

Depending on the procedure you could expect some mild swelling and bruising in the treated area; a garment or dressing to aid healing should be worn. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided immediately after surgery.

Where will the treatment take place?

With operating facilities in such prestigious locations as King Edward VII hospital and the Weymouth Street hospital in Marylebone, the heart of London’s Harley Street medical district, you can be assured of expert and responsive surgical care. Wound checks and outpatient visits are offered in both Marylebone and Kensington around several sites in the sumptuous Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The Rozina Ali Clinic offers best in class, Kensington based, bespoke aesthetic treatments tailored to your individual needs.
