Hair Growth
1. Anagen (Growing Phase)
Anagen is the longest phase, lasting 3 to 5 years for the hair on your head, but longer growth phases have been recorded. It is th length of this phase that determines how long your hair can grow.
The anagen phase differs with different types of hair. For example, eyebrows and and pubic hair have significantly shorter anagen phase, hence as a rule, they remain shorter than scalp hair.
During the anagen phase, hair is spouting out from the hair follicles and being pushed out. This process will continue until the hair is cut or reaches the end of its lifespan and falls out. At any time, almost 85-90 percent of the hairs on your scalp are in the anagen (growth) phase.
2. Catagen (Transition Phase)
Catagen describes the short Transition phase lasting only days (approx 10 days), during which hair follicles shrink and hair growth slows. The hair also separates from the bottom of the hair follicle, yet remains in place during its final days of growing.
Only about 5 percent of the hairs on your head are in the catagen phase at any given time.
3. Telogen (Resting Phase)
Telogen is the Resting phase and typically lasts about 3 months. An estimated 10 to 15 percent of your scalp hairs are in this phase.
Hairs don’t grow during the telogen phase, but they may not shed or fall out either.
The telogen phase is also when new hairs start to form within follicles that have released their hairs during the catagen phase.
Some health experts consider the telogen phase the ‘shedding’ phase, whilst others divide this stage into the telogen (resting phase) followed by the shedding or exogen phase.
4. Exogen (Shedding Phase)
Exogen is the description given to the Shedding phase when hair is shed from the scalp, often helped along by over zealous washing in hot water or vigorous brushing. Losing 50 to 100 hairs per day during the exogen phase is normal. Losing significantly more is worrying.
During the exogen phase, which can last several months ( 2 to 5 months), new hairs are growing within the follicles as old hairs fall away and the cycle begins again
Hair colour, length and density all lend value to the appearance of your hair and this may lead to comfort and pride in your full head of hair or self-consciousness or despair as you lose your hair.

Hair Loss
According to studies, both men and women feel more attractive when their hair is in good condition, while bad hair days increase levels of self-doubt and self-criticism. For many people, a positive solution might be changing their hair style or by visiting a salon. For those confronting daily hair loss or thinning, it can be a huge blow to self-esteem, increase anxiety and may make an individual look significantly older than their years. People affected by hair loss can feel as if they’re losing a part of who they are and feel frustrated as many solutions on the market promise much but deliver very little.
Hair loss can result from various factors, often combined. Genetics, especially male or female pattern baldness, is a major cause, often worsening with age. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, or due to thyroid issues can also lead to hair loss.
Stress, nutritional deficiencies, and medical conditions like alopecia areata contribute as well, while frequent heat styling and harsh treatments can weaken hair. Identifying the root cause is key for effective treatment and prevention.
Luckily, advances in aesthetic medicine have introduced effective treatments that go beyond the superficial, targeting the root causes of hair loss and stimulating regrowth. Dr Rozina Ali offers several solutions in her Kensington based aesthetic medicine practice.
Causes of Hair Loss
Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium refers to accelerated resting/shedding and can follow a stressful event, rapid weight loss, hormonal changes, or certain medications
Anagen Effluvium
Anagen effluvium refers to very rapid hair loss that can occur after certain medical treatments, like chemotherapy where the rapidly dividing (growing) hair follicle cells are inadvertently targeted as a side effect of many chemotherapy drugs. Radiation therapy may lead to the same.
Androgenic Alopecia
Androgenic alopecia is the most common form of baldness seen. It refers to hereditary baldness that can affect anyone but is more colloquially described as male pattern baldness. Other forms of hair loss with preventable or reversible factors include those caused by disease, deficiency or injury.
Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia, where Hair loss is caused by tightly pulled hairstyles such as tight ponytails, braids, or cornrows.
Thyroid Disease
Thyroid disease, severe or prolonged hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can cause diffuse hair loss across the scalp.
Iron Deficiency
Iron deficiency, too little iron in the bloodstream can contribute to hair loss.
Vitamin or Mineral Deficiency
Vitamin or mineral deficiency, deficiencies in biotin, folate, riboflavin, or vitamin B12 have been associated with hair loss.
Medications
Some drugs, like those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss as a side effect.
Reasons
The most common reasons people will seek surgical help with hair loss are when reversible or treatable measures have been addressed by primary care or self medication (Biotin, zinc, iron supplements) yet the issues continue.

Thinning Hair
Thinning hair is often caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress, nutritional deficiencies, and medical conditions like thyroid disorders or anaemia. Ageing, overuse of harsh hair treatments, and scalp conditions such as dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis can also weaken hair, leading to reduced density and volume.
Baldness
Baldness, or Androgenic alopecia, is primarily caused by genetics, hormonal imbalances, ageing, and medical conditions. The most common form is male or female pattern baldness, which results from a genetic sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that shrinks hair follicles over time. Other causes include autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, and environmental factors.
Up to now, non-surgical or minimally invasive methods had not been particularly effective therefore in widespread use and surgical hair transplants were often the immediate first step. Deficiencies in vital nutrients such as Zinc, Iron, Biotin are assessed and addressed.
