What is a Facelift?

A facelift restores form, fullness and function of a face by addressing the effects of ageing, illness, sun exposure, stress and weight loss.

facial ageing acts at every level – bone, dentition, soft tissue, muscle, ligaments and fat components. When facial volume decreases, and the skin becomes less elastic, it leads to the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, lines, and loose skin, visible as soft, droopy contours, excess skin and jowling.

Facelift, known in Greek as rhytidectomy is a descriptive term for a whole collection of surgeries including removal of excess loose skin, stretching of wrinkles, tightening and lifting of sagging underlying tissues and repositioning of descended structures such as the fat pads to rejuvenate the face. These changes can rejuvenate your appearance, your outlook and your experiences.

There are as many different types of facelift as there are faces. Every procedure is individualised to address your needs and areas of concern. In order to best rejuvenate, volumise and regenerate a face, Dr Rozina Ali offers all incarnations of facelifts including MACS, deep plane and High SMAS. As a matter of course, Rozina always includes the addition of localised fat and stem cells to her facelift protocols to restore volume and improve skin quality, in order to give the best aesthetic outcome and longevity to your results.

SMAS facelift: SMAS stands for superficial musculo-aponeurotic system, the strong fascia overlying the muscles of the face. This procedure focuses on tightening the fascia tighten and lift the underlying facial musculature and fat pads

Deep Plane facelift: This is a deeper technique designed to provide a natural and long-lasting rejuvenation of the face. It involves repositioning and tightening the deeper layers of the face, including the muscles and connective tissues without separating the skin from these layers

MACS lift: MACS stands for Minimal Access Cranial Suspension facelift. This is a less invasive surgical procedure using purse string tightening to address moderate signs of facial ageing. It relies on elastic skin tone and provides lift of underlying structures.

Who would benefit from a Facelift?

Suitable candidates for a facelift include healthy individuals who are concerned about softening contours and droop as well as increasing wrinkles, creases or jowls. For some people, noticeable facial ageing may have a detrimental effect on self-esteem or social/emotional function, it can also affect your role or relevance in the workplace. A facelift can address a sagging lower face, jowls, marionette lines, a soft or broken jawline, a face merging into the neck without a defined border, deep nasolabial creases.

A facelift addresses the downward and outward expansion of loose underlying structures and inelastic skin. For those with thin or even sunken empty faces, Rozina Ali not only provides repositioning of fat pads, but volumising of facial compartments with fat transfer. In the right hands, in the right place, fat is the elixir of youth!

YOUR FACELIFT JOURNEY

The consultation

The consultation process before a facelift is a vital first step in your transformation journey. In her Kensington clinic, Dr Rozina Ali and her team will take the time to deeply understand your individual goals, assess your facial structure, and consider all the factors that may influence the outcome. This vital stage of the process not only provides an opportunity to address any questions or concerns, but also enables us to develop a treatment plan, personalised to your needs and preferred outcomes. This can include collagen supplements, non-surgical treatments and psychological support.

Your Treatment

Depending on the extent of the corrections needed, incisions are carefully made in discreet areas like along the temple hairline, around the ear creases, and possibly extending into the hairline behind the ear.

The neck is addressed during a facelift, and in some cases, a small incision under the chin may be necessary. Once the skin and underlying tissues are lifted, fat is repositioned as needed, and the underlying fascia (SMAS) is tightened to restore youthful contours to the face and neck, adding volume where it’s needed. Excess skin is trimmed away, and the remaining skin is redraped for a smooth, natural result.

A small drain is typically placed to remove any excess fluid and is removed the morning after surgery.

Your Aftercare

After the procedure, a facelift bandage is used to support the chin/neck interface and to minimise swelling and bruising. Discomfort can be managed with elevation, reduced activity and moderate over-the-counter painkillers. Strenuous activities should be avoided during the recovery period.

Where will the treatment take place

With operating facilities in such prestigious locations as Harley street, South Kensington, King Edward VII hospital and the Weymouth Street hospital in Marylebone,  you can be assured of expert and responsive surgical care. Wound checks and outpatient visits are offered in both Marylebone and Kensington. Rozina Ali offers best in class, bespoke aesthetic treatments tailored to your individual needs.
