What is a Breast Lift?

The female breast tells the story of one’s life, of puberty, weight gain, pregnancy, motherhood, diet, lifestyle, genetic heritage and much more. Our breasts change throughout the stages of our lives and all, but the smallest breasts will sag, especially associated with significant hormonal milestones such as the menopause.

The effects that having sagging breasts can have on an individual may impact aesthetically, socially and emotionally. Many women seek information about ways to improve droopy empty looking breasts and create breasts that are fuller, firmer and more pert. A breast lift, or mastopexy, lifts and tightens the breasts by removing excess skin and moulding the breast tissue to create a more youthful and uplifted contour. Enlarged or malpositioned areola are reduced and repositioned as required. A breast lift optimally rejuvenates the breast profile and adds fullness to the upper pole and cleavage.

Who would benefit from a Breast Lift?

Surgical breast lift procedures are highly individual and should always be undertaken for yourself, not to meet someone else’s expectations or conform to a social ideal. When you choose to have surgery will depend on your work and lifestyle preferences. It may be a good option for you if you are physically healthy, maintain a stable weight, and do not smoke. You might consider the procedure if you are bothered by sagging breasts, a loss of shape and volume, or if your breasts have a flat upper pole, poor cleavage, or an elongated, pendulous appearance. It is also suitable if your nipples fall below the breast crease when unsupported, point downward, or if you have stretched skin, enlarged areolae, or asymmetry between your breasts.

How a Breast Lift is performed

The Consultation

During your consultation, be prepared to discuss frankly and in detail your surgical goals. We also ask after medical conditions, allergies, treatments, current medications, supplements, alcohol and tobacco use, past surgeries, family history of breast cancer, and the results of any mammograms or biopsies. Rozina will assess your overall health and expectations, any individual risk factors, examine your breasts, and take measurements of their size, shape, skin quality, and nipple placement.

Dr Rozina Ali will also take photographs and use them to discuss your treatment options, recommend a plan, explain the likely outcomes and potential risks or complications, and review the options for your breast lift.

Your Treatment

Surplus skin is removed from around the areola (peri-areola lift) or in multiple triangles under the breast to remove excess droopiness and width. The breast tissue itself is remodelled into a tighter, higher cone and the nipple-areola complex (NAC)
repositioned at a higher level so that the nipples lie at the most projecting point of the tightened and lifted breast. Surgery is normally offered as a day case procedure under a general anaesthetic, but if preferred, or if combined with implants, fat transfer or a more major reduction in size, the option for an overnight stay in hospital is also available.

Your Aftercare

Following the surgical breast lift operation, drains which are small tubes may be positioned to enable blood to drain. You will be prescribed painkillers for any discomfort and a post-operative surgical compression bra is offered to optimally support the breasts and reduce bruising, swelling and any discomfort following surgery. We recommend you refrain from strenuous physical exercise for 4–6 weeks, then be guided by your level of comfort.
