What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery, also known as bilateral breast reduction (BBR) or a reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve breasts of a more desired size, in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large, heavy or pendulous breasts.
Who would benefit from a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is a good option if you are physically healthy, ideally do not smoke and are concerned that your breasts are too large. That may be breasts that make you feel uncomfortable or breasts that are uncomfortable and limit your physical activity, cause back, neck or shoulder pain, give you unsightly shoulder indentations from bra straps or skin irritation between or beneath the breasts (intertrigo).

Breast reduction involves making incisions on the breast to remove the excess breast tissue and skin. If breast size is largely due to fatty tissue and excess skin is not a factor, liposuction alone may be used for breast reduction surgery. The technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will be determined by your individual anatomy, breast composition, amount of reduction desired, your personal preferences and the surgeon’s advice. If the breast reduction required is very large or the nipple areola complex is very droopy, free nipple grafting may be advised.
What can I expect from my recovery?
After the procedure, dressings and a post-operative surgical compression bra should be worn to minimise swelling, bruising and pain and support your breasts as they heal.
